RESUMO

Subdermal contraceptive implants are one of the effective and reversible methods of contraception available today. Implanon is a Saudi FDA-approved contraceptive that is commonly used by the Saudi population. Along with their hormonal side effects such as mood changes and acne, subdermal contraceptive implants can also lead to more life-threatening, albeit rare, mishaps, such as the deeper migration of them into the axillary and thoracic structures. Only a few cases exist in the literature regarding these rare complications. In this case report, we describe the case of a 31-year-old woman presenting with ulnar neuropathy due to deep proximal migration 3 years after the insertion of an Implanon. The foreign body was removed using intraoperative image-enhancing fluoroscopy, with neurological symptoms being resolved as a result.

RESUMO

Ectodermal dysplasia is a genetic disorder characterized by the abnormal development of two or more ectodermally driven structures, leading to various clinical manifestations such as sparse hair, dry skin, and hypodontia or anodontia. The absence of teeth significantly impacts the quality of life for individuals affected by this condition. This article presents a clinical case report of a patient with ectodermal dysplasia who underwent full mouth rehabilitation using computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology to fabricate a mandibular complete denture and a maxillary overdenture.

An arachnoid cyst is a benign lesion filled with cerebrospinal fluid that usually develops in the middle cranial fossa. The arachnoid cyst may become symptomatic if it has a large size or when it gets ruptured. Spontaneous rupture of an arachnoid cyst is a very rare complication. We report the case of an 11-year-old girl who was brought to the emergency department with a complaint of a progressive headache that was associated with vomiting. On examination, she was found to have papilledema. Subsequently, magnetic resonance imaging of the brain was performed to exclude any space-occupying lesion. The scan demonstrated a right extra-axial temporal lesion, measuring 7.8 x 5.4 x 4.9 cm on maximum dimensions, along with an extension to the right cerebral convexity in a crescentic shape. The lesion follows the signal intensity of cerebrospinal fluid on all sequences and exhibited no post-contrast enhancement or restricted diffusion. The lesion exerted a mass effect in the form of compression of the right temporal lobe. These findings were consistent with an arachnoid cyst with subdural hygroma. The patient was referred to the neurosurgery team. Then, the right temporal arachnoid cyst was drained through the right temporal craniotomy and the subdural hygroma was drained through a frontal Burr hole. The patient was seen after one month in the pediatrics clinic and was completely asymptomatic.

Background: The lips are covered with grooves and wrinkles, which form a characteristic pattern called a "lip print. The study of lip prints is called cheiloscopy. Searching for lip prints in the crime scene investigation helps in personnel identification and establishment of the true nature of the crime. Objective: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and awareness of cheiloscopy among dental undergraduates, postgraduate students, and general dental practitioners. Materials and methods : This cross-sectional observational, descriptive, survey-based study was conducted among 320 dental professionals, which included undergraduates, graduates, postgraduate dental students, and general dental practitioners aged between 18 and 32 years. A self-administered structured questionnaire written in English and Arabic was distributed to all willing participants. The questionnaire included knowledge and awareness-based questions along with demographic details of the participants. The Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were applied to find out the association between the characteristics of the study participants and their knowledge and awareness of forensic odontology. A p-value of 0.05 was considered significant for all the statistical tests using IBM Corp. Released 2017. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 25.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp. Results: A total of 320 dental professionals completed the survey. The majority of participants (55.3%) were males (and 14.4% were females) between the ages of 23 and 27. Most of the participants were general dental practitioners (36.9%), followed by undergraduates (26.3%), graduates (8.8%), and postgraduates (18.1%). Cheiloscopy, the study of lip prints, was known to 36.6% of the participants. Whereas the majority of the participants (63.4%) were not aware of it. Postgraduate (46.7%) students had more knowledge as compared to undergraduates, graduates, and general dental practitioners. About 81.6% of the participants were not aware of the classification of lip prints by Tsuchihashi and Suzuki. Conclusion:Overall, there was a lack of knowledge and awareness of cheiloscopy among all study participants, although they had good knowledge of forensic odontology. Compared to undergraduates and graduates, postgraduate dentistry students showed a greater level of cheiloscopy knowledge and awareness. Comparatively to students, general dentists, however, lacked understanding and awareness of cheiloscopy. This condition, however, can be improved if necessary steps are taken to make forensic odontology a part of the dental curriculum in Saudi Arabia.

Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has negatively affected many aspects of daily life. In Saudi Arabia, many studies, using a range of assessment approaches, have examined how the pandemic has affected the mental health of both the general public and healthcare workers. However, to develop effective public-health initiatives for such crisis events, it would also be relevant to determine the pandemic's impact on the behavioral, emotional, and social lives of Saudi children. Objective To assess, among Saudi children aged 3-15 years, the behavioral, emotional, and social changes that have occurred in their daily lives due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods This study featured a cross-sectional design. Potential participants were approached through the most popular social media in Saudi Arabia, and the final sample size was 651 parents. As, at the time of data collection, the members of the Saudi public were requested to avoid face-to-face meetings where possible, a well-designed electronic questionnaire featuring closed-ended questions was used. Results Descriptive statistics showed that the mean age of the parents was 29±7 years (range: 20-60 years); over half (58%) were female. During the COVID-19 outbreak, one-third of children had asked to sleep in their parents' beds. Furthermore, approximately 30% of children demonstrated increased irritability and mood swings when compared with the period before the pandemic. Concerning adaptive social behaviors, during the pandemic, 22% of children appeared calmer and 14% of children seemed more thoughtful. Our study reports more screen time, less physical activity, and reduced sleep time among children compared with the pre-pandemic period. Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic has psychologically affected children. The present results highlight the need to reduce this psychological burden by enhancing children's emotional resilience and involving parents in health-promotion programs aimed at mitigating the negative impacts of such public-health crises.

Luliconazole is a new topical imidazole antifungal drug for the treatment of skin infections. It has low solubility and poor skin penetration which limits its therapeutic applications. In order to improve its therapeutic efficacy, spanlastics nanoformulation was developed and optimized using a combined mixture-process variable design (CMPV). The optimized formulation was converted into a hydrogel formula to enhance skin penetration and increase the efficacy in experimental cutaneous Candida albicans infections in Swiss mice wounds. The optimized formulation was generated at percentages of Span and Tween of 48% and 52%, respectively, and a sonication time of 6.6 min. The software predicted that the proposed formulation would achieve a particle size of 50 nm with a desirability of 0.997. The entrapment of luliconazole within the spanlastics carrier showed significant (p < 0.0001) antifungal efficacy in the immunocompromised Candida-infected Swiss mice without causing any irritation, when compared to the luliconazole treated groups. The microscopic observation showed almost complete removal of the fungal colonies on the skin of the infected animals (0.2 ± 0.05 log CFU), whereas the control animals had 0.2 ± 0.05 log CFU. Therefore, luliconazole spanlastics could be an effective formulation with improved topical delivery for antifungal activity against C. albicans.
